If you're a player who struggles with making solid contact and finds themselves sliding in the golf swing — which many amateur players can relate with — top golf instructor Tony Ruggiero and Korn Ferry player Emilio Gonzalez have an easy solution.
In the video below, Gonzalez performs a resistance drill that uses an elastic band from Ruggiero's Golf Pivot Pack, which allows the pro golfer to clean up some bad habits.
How Emilio Gonzalez's drill works
In the video, Gonzalez is working on improving his iron shots — using the PureOne "Short" to help dial in his ball-striking — while using a resistance band to keep his body in the proper positions.
With a golf club set up behind him, Ruggiero has Gonzalez take a few swings to feel where his weight is being distributed, ensuring he's loaded up properly to avoid sliding off the ball.
Since he had a tendency to shift off the ball, which got pressure to the outside of his trail side and didn’t allow him to load into the trail foot, Ruggiero had Gonzalez turn and stretch the band in his backswing, making sure he avoided any contact with the rear club.
By simply turning straight back rather than sliding, the drill allowed Gonzalez to feel how to load up the right way, providing a repeatable motion.
And with the help of the PureOne, he was able to see instant feedback on his contact, building confidence after making the subtle adjustment.
Tony Ruggiero is recognized as a top golf instructor by both GOLF Magazine and GOLF Digest, and is the host of the TOUR COACH podcast. You can discover more about Ruggiero on his Instagram account.
